I am stealing that title from a Leo Tolstoy book that was printed at the turn of the 20th century.  The profound logic in regards to what exactly makes a person a  slave encompassed in this book still ring true today.  “Slavery never goes away” says Tolstoy “it just changes forms”.  The form of the modern slave is that of an inmate.

The above link details the horrific story of former Pennsylvania Judge Mark Ciavarella who is a modern slave trader.  This ” judge”, along with his real estate developer pal Robert K. Mericle helped to close down the county jail in his district and replace it with a private institution that Mericle would get the contract to build.  Once the new jail was finished, Ciavarella started sending kids to this jail for things like creative a negative web site and taking your mom’s car for a joy ride.  Which apparently was a harsh enough offense to get a teenager two years in private prison.   This insanity must end.

I do not blame the judge for this crime.  I don’t think sending him to jail will prevent this from ever happening again.  Human greed is the issue here.  We need to take profit out of our prison system.  That is the reality.  How many more millions of dollars will we spend trying to affix band aids to this problem before we realize that there is no solution?

As with all the problems of our society the blame rests at the feet of our TV addicted ignorant populace.  This is the other form of slavery that current has our souls in its grasp.  We don’t want to hear about these problems.  We just want to be able to come home, turn on the tube and forget our troubles.  However these troubles don’t go away just because we don’t pay attention to them.  They get worse and worse until no matter what we do, we can’t escape them.

That is the reality of our current situation.  The government can’t fix these problems because they don’t want to and aren’t being told to.  They aren’t told because overall people are ignorant to these problems.  The news and TV shows they watch are all about good guy cops sticking it to bad guy drug dealers.  What they don’t show is the human toll our justice system takes on our society.

More people are currently in jail than were slaves at the height of slavery.  People convicted of a felony are not allowed to vote.  That is exactly what they did to the slaves.  If you don’t allow people who you repress to vote out your repressive system, then you are free to do whatever you want.  As long as you keep the general voting public ignorant to what you do and why you do it.

This dire situation is totally in our control.  The American people can no longer sit idly by while their fellow citizens are stripped of their rights and used as human cattle.  Now is the time to act or as Frederick Douglas said Agitate, Agitate, Agitate.  Call your representatives, DEMAND the end to the drug war, and once again make this a country where ALL men are created equal.  Freedom is too precious a thing to send to the whorehouse to be used and then discarded.  The time to act is now.

Violence is the excuse repressive governments use to take freedoms from their citizens.  Non-Violent resistance to evil by force is the answer because it exposes the lie of our society.  We are told by our rulers that they must use violence to protect us from those who are more violent and terrible then they.  Therefore when non-violent protestors are beaten and pepper sprayed by our government, they expose their true nature.

They tell us they are the good guys.  But do good guys beat and pepper spray non-violent protestors?  Do good guys start wars for reasons that turn out to be false?  Do good guys make up 3% of the world’s population and have by far the most people in their jails?  The answer of course is no, but getting people to believe this is a very difficult thing.  The key is non-violence.

When our government beats and arrests non-violent protestors it forces the average American to take a hard look at what is going on and ask themselves, who are the bad guys here?  We have always been taught that bad guys are the ones who are powerful and pick on those who are weak.  So when we see our strong government picking on its own non-violent citizens, we have no choice but to believe the truth, that our government is violent and repressive.

If the protestors were to ever deviate from the non-violent path, it would validate our government’s violent repression.  That is what our government is waiting for.  They WANT the protests to turn violent.  Violence will then justify a like response and the movement will lose all credibility.  Non-violence forces people to look unflinchingly at what they have turned a blind eye to for over 10 years now.  The fact that our land of the free, has become a place where people profit from repression and murder.  That reality is shown every time a pregnant women and an 80 year old woman get pepper sprayed:

THIS IS REALITY!  Our government is attacking it’s own non-violent citizens.  It’s mask has been taken off and it’s true face has been revealed.  It is time for us to ask ourselves, which side are we on.  Do we cower in fear and side with the repressors, or do we embrace freedom no matter the cost and support the repressed.  For me the choice is obvious.

The REAL Don Draper Ad of the Day!

Um yeah but… There is nothing that can be said about this one other than ask “Was Nigel Tufnel the only guy coming up with ad’s in the 60’s and 70’s?”  Smell the shoe!  What’s wrong with being sexy?

Pretty simple really:

End the drug war and use counseling to deal with drug addiction

End all overseas wars and close all overseas bases.  If countries want us to stay, they can pay all our expenses until their own army is trained.

Reduce military spending to no more than 2 times our next closest competitor.

Demand that no CEO can make over 60 times what their average employee makes.  If they want a raise, everyone gets a raise.

End the crippling golden parachute system for exit pay being given to CEOs

Health Care cannot be for profit and no health care company can have their stocks traded on Wall Street.

No defense contractor can be a for profit corporation that is traded on Wall Street.

Prisons cannot be for profit or private.

All payments going to CEOs of a government contractor that receives more than 50% of its companies gross value from tax dollars can be no larger than 250 thousand dollars per year.

Legalize and tax pot

Corporations cannot have the same rights as individual citizens.

Give 50% of all the money generated with these cuts back to the tax payers and give the rest to education, infrastructure and paying off the debt.

Create a natural gas pipeline to replace oil heating in every house in America that wants gas instead of oil.

These are very easy solutions to our problems.  If implemented they would being to change America from a land of endless debt and despair, back into a land of oppertunity and growth.
