By far the most fascinating and under reported aspect of the Dookhan case was Annie Dookhan’s relationship with Norfolk County ADA George Papachristos.  Dookhan had a massive, creepy crush on the former Norfolk County ADA or “GEORGIIIEEEEEE” as she once gushingly referred to him in an email.

Unfortunately for Annie, I don’t think the feeling was mutual.  From all the emails I’ve seen Dookhan was smitten but old George stuck her in the friend zone.  The poor dear.  Just because she was in the friend zone with an ADA she was testifying in cases for, that didn’t really deter her from trying though.  Afterall, he was DREAMY:

Annie Love Poem to George

Dookhan changed the words to the song Belle (Small Town) from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast to express her feelings for her “Tall, Dark Strong and Handsome Crush Dude”

I received the above poem Dookhan wrote about her “crush dude” from the Department of Public Health after trying for a year to get all of Dookhan’s emails with MA ADAs.  Her emails show, beyond a shaddow of a doubt, that Dookhan wanted to help her “crush dude” and all of her other friends in the ADAs offices around MA win their cases.

In one email, Papachristos actually tells Dookhan exactly how much the evidence Dookhan is testing needs to weigh to get a trafficking conviction and adds “Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED…”

In these emails Dookhan jokes about adding years to defendant’s sentences for pissing her off and making her testify.  She also says defendants should be locked up and have the key thrown away.  Remember this is a woman who admitted to intentionally changing negative drug results to positive to the police when she was arrested.

Since this case broke people have wondered why someone would do something like this.  The explanation from the state and the media has always been she was just rushing to do more cases to get promoted.  They have told the public this despite being fully aware what she was saying to the ADAs.  The state and the media don’t want to tell the people the truth because that would force the state to admit that the drug war is completely rigged.

That statement isn’t based on the rantings of a madman. That is based on a chemist repeatedly telling ADAs how badly she wanted to put people away.  That is based on emails from top level DPH officials where they talk about Dookhan having pictures of Papachristos on her desktop when she was fired and that was her motive for doing what she did:

DPH Investigation

So after four years of investigating this, my question is why doesn’t anyone care about it?  Why does no one care that a chemist was in love with an ADA and rigged evidence to help him convict people.  It seems like a fascianting story to me.  But, sadly, I feel like I am a lone voice in the wilderness on this issue.

So Abby Haglage of The Daily Beast wrote a piece on Dookhan:

The piece was about how, after four years, MA has done little to nothing to help fix the mess that Dookhan created.  She states that only one percent of the over 24,000 cases have actually been discovered and resolved by the state.

She also makes a rather curious assertion:

Hired as a chemist in 2003, Dookhan—the daughter of immigrants—was known as a star employee at the state drug lab. It was her obsession with maintaining a perfect image, according to The Boston Globe, that drove her to falsify drug evidence for years. Her crimes were not necessarily motivated by malice, but by the desire to be valued for her speed. And for a while, she was very speedy.

So Dookhan was just working too darn fast!  That’s it.  Who cares that she wrote an email to one of her ADA buddies saying she was going to give a defendant an extra 10 years if she had to drive to Brockton and he stipulates.  That was all just part of the hard work and joking around with her coworkers.

Jokes about adding 10 years

The only problem is she was just a chemist testing drug evidence.  Right?  Or was she something different?  Was she friends with the police and ADAs perhaps?  Perhaps they even considered her an indispensable part of their prosecution team.  Afterall, like one prosecutor said:

Convict him faster

When Dookhan testifies they convicted defendants faster.  Because again, these defendants were pieces of crap.  Just ask the only ADA who resigned because of this case:

Piece Of Crap

So if you’re a chemist and testing evidence for a defendant who an ADA calls a guy a piece of crap, wouldn’t you make sure that that piece of crap was convicted regardless of what your testing says?  You would do exactly what Dookhan did according to MA Assistant Attorney General John Vernor. Grab a pile of 15-20 drug samples, test only five of them, then list them all as positive.

That’s 15-20 more pieces of crap taken off the streets.  Now multiply that by 24k and you get the idea.  She wasn’t trying to be speedy, she was trying to do the right thing and keep people safe from the people that the MA ADAs called pieces of crap.  That way too she gets to keep her reputation as the most efficient chemist in the lab too.  So it was a win win really.

There has been so much blatant misinformation about Dookhan’s motive in this case that one has to stop and think that it almost HAS to be intentional at this point.  There is no desire by the news media or the state police to actually investigate this case and get to the truth.

Why?  Because the ADAs who were involved in these cases are covering up her true motive to protect themselves.  This case isn’t about one chemist. It is about self preservation and controlling the narrative.  The media just laps up anything the police tell them, almost without question and simply regurgitates it to the public.

So the reason nothing is getting done with the 24k cases of wrongful conviction isn’t due to incompetence on the part of the MA ADAs.  They are simply ensuring that their corrupt criminal justice system remains in tack and are waiting out everyone’s prison sentence so they don’t have to release people from jail early. Because, as they stated over and over again to their friend Dookhan, these people who are in jail are pieces of crap and you don’t let pieces of crap out of jail early.

Dookhan.Discovery 9.26.12 Police Report

The whole Dookhan case began with her illegally taking samples from the lab’s evidence safe without notifying the lab’s evidence officer.  Dookhan took 90 samples from Norfolk county and was testing them without authorization.  Chemists were not even allowed to be inside the evidence room without an evidence officer present let alone take samples.

Once this was discovered Dookhan was confronted and she denied that she did anything wrong.  Mysteriously the next day there was an entry in the evidence log book for the 90 samples with Dookhan’s initials and the initials of evidence officer Elizabeth O’Brien.  Dookhan went back and forged O’Brien’s initials in the book and thought no one would know.  Yet she was allowed to continue to work at the lab for another 9 months!

I’ve attached the 101 page police investigation into the Dookhan case.  I have read the entire thing.  That’s how sad my life is.  However reading this was not a complete waste of time.

The three most important pieces of information in the police report were:

  • Dookhan admitted to police that she intentionally turned negative drug test results to positive (I.E. A substance that was tested and came back as no drugs present was switched to having cocaine or heroin present by Dookhan)
  • Dookhan had a key to the evidence safe and full access to the labs computer database.  Enabling her to rig results in any case being tested in the lab.
  • Dookhan was reported to lab supervisors for forging other chemists initials on her testing forms.

The last one doesn’t seem like a major deal but forging someone’s initials on paperwork in the science world is a major issue.  It compromises all the data that you are testing and completely undermines your credibility.  I work in the Biotech field and have seen several people fired for doing that just once.  Dookhan did it several times and every incident was swept under the rug.

The facts brought up in the police report bring into question not only everything Dookhan did but also everything that came out of the Hinton lab as well.  The lab itself was unaccredited.  Meaning they had no standards for testing and their procedures on how to test drug evidence were not followed by lab staff. How can anything that came out of that lab be trusted?

Even more distrubing than what was uncovered in the Hinton Lab is what wasn’t asked.  The police asked very few, if any, questions about Dookhan’s relationship with members of the District Attorney’s office in Norfolk County.  After all Norfolk county is where every sample from the June 2011 sample breech came from.  Shouldn’t the police have been interested in why she was testing samples from Norfolk county and ONLY Norfolk county?

Apparently not.  However what they did look into was Dookhan’s productivity compared to other chemists.  A top performing chemist in the lab would do 125 samples per month.  Dookhan did over 500 every month.  According to several chemists those numbers were utterly impossible to achieve if she was properly performing those tests.

So the question remains, why would Dookhan do all this?  Why would she test so many samples and change negative results to positive?  Why would she be so interested in the samples for Norfolk County?  I will get to that in my next blog post but here is an email, obtained through a public records request, that sheds some light into why she did what she did…

DPH Investigation

This emails was sent as part of the DPH’s internal investigation into Dookhan after she was fired.  They talk about possible motive and include a number of emails she wrote to Norfolk County ADA George Papachristos.  They also say he had “A bunch of pictures of ADA Papachristos on her computer”.

So I have obviously been updating this blog with a lot of Annie Dookhan stuff recently.  This “stuff” is derived from emails obtained from the  Department of Public Health. It took over a year to get these emails and they paint a clear picture of what really happened while Dookhan worked as a chemist for the DPH.

I have been following the Dookhan case since it first broke back in September of 2012.  She was fired from the Hinton Lab for a number of offenses including breaching lab protocols for the improper handling drug samples. She got caught testing 90 samples from Norfolk County without properly signing them out with the evidence officer.

That doesn’t sound like a big deal right?  Who cares if she forgets to check things out properly?  Well it was a big deal because somehow, Dookhan had access to the evidence safe.  She got those samples without the knowledge of the evidence officer or anyone else in the lab.  When I read that in the Globe, something just didn’t make sense.

Why would she check out 90 samples for Norfolk county and put her job at risk?  The state explained that she was just a hard worker.  She had good intentions but had a burning desire to succeed so she bent the rules to test as many samples as she could.  She wanted to do a good job and help the underfunded lab test as many samples as she could.  At least that’s what they wanted people to believe.

Then, a few days before Christmas in 2012, the Globe wrote an article entitled “Emails show close ties between Dookhan and the DAs office”.  That got my attention but apparently I was almost alone in the that regard.  This story painted a very different picture of Dookhan then what the state said.  It showed emails where she was flirting with an ADA and saying that she wanted to “Take drug dealers off the streets”.

One ADA even told Dookhan exactly how much he needed drugs to weigh to get a trafficking conviction and she came back shortly after with an amount 30 pounds over the required weight.  It seemed really sketchy to say the least.  But what was even sketchier was the total silence of the Boston media on this angle of the story.  Almost no one else reported this.  Just this one article in the globe a few days before Christmas then nada.

Something was wrong and no one wanted to find out what it seemed.  That pissed me off so then I started looking for stuff.  The first thing I found was her arrest report…
