We have a major problem with how our government does business.  Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to the problem.  The main problem seems to be for profit contractors doing business with the American government.  They get to lobby our lawmakers, pay their CEO’s very high salaries and give large campaign contributions (bribes) to keep our tax dollars coming to them.  The only problem is that their primary source of income is our tax dollars.  So they are using our tax dollars to lobby our congressmen (who we pay) who then give them more of our tax dollars for the services they provide.  How is this not double dipping?  The idea behind all of this is that contractors do things better because they are looking to do their best to make a profit.  That is a correct mindset in most cases, only not when it comes to our tax dollars.  Do we really want companies scheming to find ways to get MORE of our tax dollars?  When I write this post, I am specifically thinking about companies like Halliburton, Lockheed Martin etc.  Just like Democrats like to pretend that they care about the poor while they live in mansions and indulge in a luxurious lifestyle.  Republicans create independent agencies to bleed our tax dollars from us while saying they are trying to slash government spending.  Dick Cheney still gets 1 million dollars per year from Halliburton and he gets a tax payer pension and secret service security detail on our dime as well.  I think that that million dollar mark is a very low figure considering how much money Cheney got for his old company.  This association was smartly politicized by the right wing sound machine (formerly The Miami Sound Machine).  They do such a great job of dismissing obvious facts and making people feel stupid if they believe them.  Like a guy who used to run a company, becoming vice president and then giving his old company the largest government no bid contract in history.  If the vice president in question was Al Gore and his old company was a wind farm, there would be riots in the streets.  Instead Cheney was getting the money for his war supply machine and the people who had a problem with it were relegated to being called “crazy left winger conspiracy theorists”.  The only problem is there was no conspiracy, Cheney actually gave Halliburton (the company he was a CEO of) those no bid contracts.  How is that not a conflict of interest?  From 2000 to 2005 federal contracts were up 86%.  The total dollar amount it was up was 275 Billion tax dollars.  Halliburton profit rose an astounding 600%!  How can you not be suspicious of what he was doing and why he was doing it?  For too long we have allowed obvious fraud to go on at the highest levels of government while blaming immigrants and the poor for our current financial situation.  Poor people do need to not be satisfied with a government handout, my only question is, why don’t we ask for the same from contractors who get the majority of our tax dollars?  A possible solution to all this would be to make all government contractors not for profit.  That would ensure that their greed doesn’t get out of control and would clean up a lot of this.  The downside of that would again be actually getting someone to create a non profit defense contractor, however, I think there are plenty of people out there willing to try.  Especially in this economy.  Isn’t that what America is all about, competition.   I have attached two articles on federal contract spending for your reading enjoyment.
