As I saw Dick Cheney’s corpse get heckled last week I laughed. You see he thinks he got away with torturing people and killing innocent civilians. In one sense he did because he is able to live outside of a prison. However in another more real sense, the hecklers prove that his actions in promoting torture will follow him like a shadow for as long as his robot organs keep him alive.
During his vomit enducing speech he did say some things that people need to take note of, especially those on the left who are Obama supporters. He essentially said that Obama was doing the same thing he and Rumsfield did and he is right. Gitmo is still open, despite Obama’s campaign pledges. The secret CIA torture prisons still exist throughout the world and we still lie and say they don’t. The “end of combat operations in Iraq” that this administration touted in 2010 should have had a mission accomplished banner draped over it since there are still 50,000 troops in that country. There are still frequent bombings there as well, so nothing has really ended.
These hard realities should weigh heavily on the hearts of those who supported Obama. I voted for him and helped to send him to Washington because I, like many of his supporters, was sick of my tax dollars going to fund torture and war crimes. The fact that these things are continuing into the third year of his first term are beyond disturbing. This is not what I want the majority of my tax dollars to go towards and I think the majority of the people who voted for this guy would agree with me.
Bob Woodward’s book “Obama’s Wars” give us a picture of what is really going on inside of Obama’s national security team. Obama has stuck by 14 intelligence “findings” that Bush flat-out made up to justify the CIA’s actions on a worldwide basis. That means that he is going along with justifying torture on a worldwide scale. If you look at Obama the candidate and Obama the president side by side he would actually be campaigning against himself and his own policies. This is beyond disturbing and gives one the impression that Obama is not actually our commander-in-chief.
In Woodward’s book, it details Obama’s plea for an “exit plan” for Afghanistan from the top generals at the pentagon. They responded by asking for more troops and ignoring his request. What this means is our top generals routinely ignore requests from their boss. What happens to you when you ignore what your boss wants at your job? Usually you get your ass booted to the curb. However if you report to the president, you can just ignore what he says. Makes sense right? The real question here is, who the hell is running our national security the guy we elected to do the job or a bunch of generals who apparently answer to no one.
I want to end this article with a quote from Woodward’s book from General Petraeus which nicely sums up what he stands for. This is the man Obama put in change of our war in Afghanistan. We need to ask ourselves, is this what we want?
“You have to recognize also that I don’t think you win this war. I think you keep fighting. It’s a little bit like Iraq, actually. . . . Yes, there has been enormous progress in Iraq. But there are still horrific attacks in Iraq, and you have to stay vigilant. You have to stay after it. This is the kind of fight we’re in for the rest of our lives and probably our kids’ lives.”
It’s time for people who consider themselves to be liberal to stand up and say no to endless war.
