The game is rigged.  That is American reality at the start of the 21st Century.  Our political system is so corrupt, so slanted towards the rich that both the dems and repubs no longer work for the people who put them into office.  They work for their peers.  As you can see from these scary charts:  http://motherjones.com/politics/2011/02/income-inequality-in-america-chart-graph everyone in America has a 1 in 22 shot of being a millionaire.  Everyone in Congress has a 1 in  2 shot.  That is how we know the game is rigged.  The guys making the laws are either rich or there to get rich by lining the pockets of those who already are.

When people decide to talk about these kinds of issues (which is exceedingly rare in this country), they usually get bogged down into arguments about dems being union suck ups and repubs being suck ups to the rich.  As the charts on the link show, 7 out of the 10 richest congressmen and women are Dems!  They don’t care about your union, they don’t care about your safety all they care about is giving out government breaks to their buddies with your tax dollars.  Congressional representatives are supposed to be just that, representatives of the people who voted them in.  How many people do you know that have 400 million dollars in their checking account?

They all represent their own interests.  Just like you and I do, only they do it on a mass scale.  The way to stop it is to not envy the 400 million dollars they have in their bank account but to feel sorry for them.  Feel sorry that they have a chance to make a real difference in the lives of so many, yet they choose selfish greed over altruism.  This does not bring happiness but only suffering.

I am sure a lot of you are saying “I can suffer with 400 million in my bank account”, it is true, money does solve some major problems in our lives and gives us a form of security.  It does not, and never will, bring lasting happiness to anyone’s life.  They fill their massive houses full of junk they don’t even want just to say they own it.  Think of what good they could do for humanity instead of buying things they don’t want to impress people they don’t like.  I know they want to do good, they need to take the next step and start actually doing it.

The answer to this problem is not socialism or communism or any ism, it is empathy.  It is finding the good inside of you and knowing what a positive difference your money can make.  Just a little goes such a long way.  It is putting yourself in the shoes of another and trying to help that person achieve their goals because no one ever helped you achieve yours.  Call it paying it forward or karma or whatever you want but in reality it is increasing the good in our society.  That end result is something worth pursuing.

We are already a very generous nation.  We give billions to charity each year and that is a true example of the American spirit.  Since the rich have so much, why not help.  I am not saying give your money away to anyone and everyone, I am saying do things you know are good and you will find lasting happiness.  Although these statistics are shocking and they reflect the current state of massive greed that prevails in this country, that doesn’t always have to be the way it is.  Each day gives up a fresh opportunity to define ourselves, it is time for the richest 1% to start embracing their own salvation.  They will be happy when they do!
